Ardbeg Smokiverse
June 20, 2025
TL;DR: Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Ardbeg Committee, Smokiverse blasts off with a high‑gravity mash that turns up creamy tropical fruit amid Ardbeg’s signature intense peat. Bottled at 48.3%, it’s both explosively smoky and surprisingly sweet—think smoked bubblegum, tropical esters, bonfire embers. Fiercely experimental yet unmistakably Ardbeg, it’s a thrilling sip neat and a bold twist in smoky cocktails.
To craft this limited-edition release—launched for Ardbeg Day 2025—the team employed a “high-gravity mashing” technique: drastically reducing mash‑water and increasing grain to amplify fruit-filling acetate esters. Distilled on Islay and matured in ex-bourbon casks, this 48.3% ABV, non-chill-filtered dram balances heavy peat smoke (Ardbeg’s malt is around 55 PPM) with an unusually vibrant, estery sweetness. It’s the first Ardbeg to explore a mash-focused flavor revolution—evoking space travel in a glass.

Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Pale Gold
- Aroma: A steady swirl of ashy smoke orbits everything — not overpowering, but gravitational, pulling each note into its path. Around it gather wisps of black licorice and star anise, the sharp tang of preserved lemon, and bright bursts of papaya, banana, and bubblegum. Beneath, sea salt sprinkled on burnt sugar, toasted brioche, warm cinnamon & a flicker of dark chocolate drifts.
- Taste & Mouthfeel: Thick and indulgent, like burnt fudge brownies drizzled in honey, layered with more licorice, a touch of cooling menthol, and a persistent ribbon of sweet, ashy smoke that grounds the sweetness in earth.
- Finish: A lingering blend of honey-dipped graham crackers and soft, sooty smoke — like embers trailing behind a comet. A rounder, sweeter Ardbeg that still packs the smoke.
- Distinctiveness: A bold evolution within Ardbeg’s ultra-peated DNA. The high-gravity mash unlocks tropical and fruity dimensions rarely seen at this smoke level.
- Overall Drinkability & Balance: Rich and dense, with intense peat and underlying sweetness that invites sipping. Powerful enough for cocktails but deserves ornamentation to stand out.
