Chateau Laubade VSOP
November 26, 2025
TL;DR: Château Laubade VSOP is a polished Bas Armagnac built on estate grown grapes, Gascon oak barrels, and sustainable farming. Expect ripe orchard fruit, almond pastry richness, gentle spice, and a long, graceful finish. Crafted from six to twelve year old eaux de vie, it delivers refinement far beyond typical VSOP depth.
Château Laubade VSOP comes from one of the most celebrated estates in Bas Armagnac, a 105 hectare property owned by the Lesgourgues family for three generations. The château stands at the centre of a fully integrated agricultural ecosystem, where sustainable viticulture, estate grown Gascon oak, and in-house distillation all play a key role in quality. Each grape variety is distilled separately using single continuous distillation before ageing six to twelve years in custom crafted Gascon oak barrels. The result is a refined VSOP with ripe fruit, gentle spice, and the unmistakable elegance of Laubade’s terroir driven approach.

Overall Review
- Overall Assessment: 82/100
- Distinctiveness: 6.5/10
- Bottle Appeal: 7/10
- Value for Price: 9.5/10
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Light Golden
- Aroma: Soft caramel and vanilla cream lead into red apples, dried grass, and delicate wildflowers. Almond croissants and dried apricots provide pastry richness, lifted by hazelnuts and a hint of dusty clove.
- Taste & Mouthfeel: Toasted almonds and red apples open smoothly, followed by clove, pink peppercorns, and subtle licorice with menthol. Notes of grape skin, soft leather, and milk chocolate add depth and warmth.
- Finish: Lingering spice, gentle licorice, soft vanilla, and a lightly drying close.
- Distinctiveness: Château Laubade VSOP is beautifully made and confidently expressive, yet it leans toward classic Bas Armagnac familiarity rather than bold innovation. Its fruit forward style, pastry notes, and elegant oak influence show clear house character, though the profile remains comfortably within traditional expectations for the category.
- Overall Drinkability & Balance: A polished and versatile VSOP that demonstrates why Laubade is considered a benchmark estate. It is smooth, balanced, and wonderfully aromatic, offering an excellent combination of quality, terroir expression, and approachability. Ideal for sipping neat, mixing into refined cocktails, or pairing with fruit driven desserts.

Laubade harvests, seasons, and cooperages oak from its own forests, giving their Armagnacs a truly unique and controlled oak signature.
