Ardbeg Wee Beastie (5 Year)
June 20, 2025

TL;DR: A little but mighty, Wee Beastie roars with intense smoky energy, youthful vitality, and earthy grit. Think smoked bacon and tar mingling with grassy bell peppers and juicy mango. On the palate, it fills with hay, cigar-box earth, and pine resin before finishing long and salty—a briny echo steeped in pepper spice, cocoa, and cured meat. It’s raw, feisty, and unforgettable—an approachable entry point into Ardbeg’s peaty world that still packs a punch.
This 5-year-old powerhouse is the youngest in Ardbeg’s core range, designed as the “rawest, smokiest Ardbeg ever.” Matured fully in a mix of ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks, it’s bottled at 47.4% ABV, non-chill filtered, and uncoloured. The mash is heavily peated malt—around 55 PPM—yielding an assertive, unfiltered Islay experience with youthful energy intact.

Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Bright Gold
- Aroma: Sweet tar opens alongside sun‑ripened citrus, sea salt, and diesel undertones. Vanilla washes over cacao nibs, warming spices, green grassy tones, capsicum, leafy notes, and a hint of ripe mango.
- Taste & Mouthfeel: Bold and smoky—smoked bacon, barnyard hay, horse‑stable earth, cigar box, and eucalyptus. Bell pepper and pine resin interplay with cacao, resin, resinous depth—a true Islay cèidil.
- Finish: A lingering blend of honey-dipped graham crackers and soft, sooty smoke — like embers trailing behind a comet. A rounder, sweeter Ardbeg that still packs the smoke.
- Distinctiveness: Wee Beastie isn’t a mellow peat whisper—it’s raw, herbal, and smoky, delivering coastal energy with youthful bravado.
- Overall Drinkability & Balance: Lean yet high-impact: it’s unfiltered intensity in every sip. Embrace it neat—or go bold with an Islay-forward cocktail.

Comments / Notes:
Bold Age Statement: Unlike many NAS whiskies, Wee Beastie proudly wears its 5‑year age stamp, signaling youthful, unapologetic peat
Full Cask Maturation: It’s not just “finished” in sherry; this dram is fully matured in a blend of ex‑bourbon and Oloroso casks—total transparency in flavor layering
Award-Winner: Grabbed a Bronze in the 2023 World Whiskies Awards, praised for its blend of dry meat, green apple, pepper, and ashy finish

Food Pairing Recommendations:
Salt-crusted Tomahawk steak – Meaty and charred, it resonates with the whisky’s beefy, cured‑meat finish and pepper spice.
Grilled halloumi with lemon & herbs – Saline cheese and bright citrus amplify the lemon‑pepper and coastal salt notes.
Dark chocolate bar (70–85%) – Bittersweet richness mirrors the cacao nibs and smoky sweetness, elevating the dram’s oily depth.
Smoked Boulevardier
Why it works: The bitter-sweet balance of Campari and vermouth softens the whisky’s raw edge while letting its smoke and spice dominate the finish. The youthful tar and cured meat notes give this classic a feral twist.
