about old pulteney 18 year

Old Pulteney’s 18 Year Old pairs the distillery’s coastal character with the richness of two-stage maturation. Aged in Wick on Scotland’s far north coast, it begins in American oak ex-bourbon casks before moving into first-fill Oloroso sherry butts. Vanilla and honey meet dried fruit, dark chocolate and cinnamon, with a saline edge running through the sweeter notes. It’s a mature expression of Old Pulteney’s maritime style, bringing richness, spice and coastal character into the same glass.

behind the bottle

James Henderson founded Pulteney Distillery in 1826, naming it after Pulteneytown, the newly developed fishing district of Wick. Its early history was tied to the town’s booming herring industry: barley arrived by sea, and whisky departed the same way. While fishing boats brought in the “silver darlings,” as herring were known locally, the distillery built a second trade just inland from the harbor. That shared history of fishing and whisky helps explain why Old Pulteney calls itself “The Maritime Malt.”

what shapes the flavor

Spirit and casks meet in the middle. Pulteney’s unusual stills, including a wash still with a flat top rather than a swan neck, produce an oily, characterful spirit with a signature briny edge. Second-fill ex-bourbon casks let that spirit’s citrus peel, unripe pear and toasted hay shine while adding oat biscuits, vanilla ice cream and lemon cake. First-fill Oloroso butts bring nougat, crème brûlée, tobacco leaf, ginger and cinnamon, and the coastal salinity cuts through rather than disappearing.

house style

Old Pulteney calls itself ‘the Maritime Malt’, and its house style leans into that: fresh citrus, honeyed sweetness and a distinct salty, coastal character. The distillery is one of the most northerly on the Scottish mainland. The 18 Year shows how well that briny spirit handles long ageing and a richer sherry finish.
