Glenfarclas 105
November 24, 2025
TL;DR: Glenfarclas 105 takes its name from the old British proof system, where ABV was multiplied by 1.75 to determine “proof.” At 60 per cent ABV, this classic cask strength release lands at 105 proof. It delivers bold, full bodied character while remaining true to Glenfarclas tradition and sherry influenced elegance.
Glenfarclas is one of Scotland’s most respected family-run distilleries, founded in 1836 and guided by the Grant family since 1865. Known for its independent spirit and deep commitment to tradition, the distillery is famous for rich, sherry-forward single malts matured in high quality casks. Glenfarclas 105 continues this legacy as a cask strength release bottled at 60 per cent ABV, offering bold character without losing the elegance that defines the house style (or as we like to call it, the distillery’s Flavor Fingerprint). Situated in Speyside and operated by John Grant since 2002, Glenfarclas remains a benchmark for full bodied, consistently crafted whisky.

Overall Review
- Overall Assessment: 87/100
- Distinctiveness: 9/10
- Bottle Appeal: 7.5/10
- Value for Price: 7/10
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Light Gold
- Aroma: Bright orange peel and yellow apple rise first, followed by warm roasted peanuts, cinnamon, and vanilla wafers. Heather and dried hay add a gentle rustic lift, while savoury salted meats weave through notes of apricot, light florals, menthol, and roasted cacao. Complex, textural, and quietly seductive.
- Taste & Mouthfeel: Graham cracker sweetness opens the palate with more yellow apple and juicy pear, carried by a pleasantly viscous mouthfeel. Ginger and black pepper add energy, while dark, unsweetened cacao and a flash of lemon bring depth and contrast. There is even a subtle Armagnac-like quality that gives it a refined, fruit-forward richness.
- Finish: Long and oily with vanilla warmth and a lively tingle that invites another sip.
- Distinctiveness: This expression is not as richly sherried as some of the deeper, darker Glenfarclas releases, yet it remains firmly rooted in the distillery’s flavour fingerprint. The malt character, traditional direct-fire distillation, and house style of fruit, nuttiness, and gentle spice all shine through. It is recognisably Glenfarclas, just presented in a leaner, more focused form.
- Overall Drinkability & Balance: A robust, well made Speyside whisky with classic Glenfarclas character and impressive structure at cask strength. It offers depth, balance, and confident flavour for a very reasonable price point. An excellent value bottle that performs well neat, with water, or in a high quality whisky cocktail.

Fun Facts / Notes:
1. Speyside or Highlands?
Although located firmly in Speyside, Glenfarclas bottles carry the word Highlands, a quirky historical nod that often surprises whisky fans.
2. The name tells a story.
Glenfarclas translates to “valley of the green grassland,” perfectly fitting the lush setting surrounding the distillery.
3. They use traditional direct-fire stills.
Glenfarclas heats its stills with direct fire, a method that can create richer, more characterful spirit. The heat lightly cooks solids in the wash, producing compounds like furfural that contribute nutty, toasty notes. Rummagers prevent burning, allowing these flavours to distill cleanly and develop beautifully over long maturation.
Food Pairing Recommendations
1. Sticky toffee pudding
The dried fruit and warm sherry notes match beautifully with caramelised sweetness.
2. Charcuterie with aged gouda
Nutty, savoury cheeses enhance the whisky’s malt and almond tones.
