SIP Scoring System (2025 Edition)
Tasting and evaluating spirits is an essential skill for both enthusiasts and professionals, allowing for a deeper understanding of quality, craftsmanship, and personal preference. The SIP Scoring System provides a structured yet intuitive approach to spirit evaluation, balancing objective sensory assessment with key secondary indicators to create a well-rounded picture of each bottle. Unlike arbitrary rating systems, SIP prioritizes sensory experience while acknowledging the broader factors that influence perception, purchase decisions, and enjoyment.
Our scoring is built on one primary evaluation category and four secondary indicators, ensuring a clear and fair assessment.
And just because a spirit is expertly crafted doesn’t mean it aligns with personal taste—and vice versa. Our system distinguishes sensory evaluation from personal enjoyment because technical quality and individual preference are not the same thing.

Primary: Overall Sensory Assessment
The most critical factor—evaluating aroma, taste, mouthfeel, and finish to determine overall quality and balance.
This category can be scored out of 100 points. Here’s the breakdown of how to score:
- 🏆 95-100: Top Honors / Benchmark Spirit - Top Honors / Benchmark Spirit - A nearly flawless, world-class expression that defines its category.
- 🔥 90-94: Outstanding / Must-Try - Extremely well-made spirit, just shy of perfection.
- 💎 85-89: Excellent / Well Above Average - Highly enjoyable, well-crafted, and polished within its style.
- ✅ 80-84: Very Good / Solid - Good balance and pleasant flavors, but not as refined as higher scores.
- 👍 75-79: Decent / Average - Drinkable and enjoyable, but lacking depth or personality.
- 🤔 70-74: Passable - Drinkable, but has clear issues (e.g., harsh ethanol, weak palate).
- 👎 60-69: Below Average / Not Recommended - Not outright undrinkable, but noticeable flaws (e.g., overly hot, flat, unbalanced).
- ⚠️ 50-59: Poor - Significant flaws—harsh, one-dimensional, or unpleasant off-notes.
- 🚨 0-49: Undrinkable / Defective / Flawed - Completely unbalanced, offensive, or chemically flawed.
Secondary: Distinctiveness
How unique is this spirit? Does it stand out in its category or bring something new and memorable to the table? This category can be scored out of 10 points. Here’s the breakdown of how to score:
- 🏆 9-10: One-of-a-kind, unforgettable - This spirit has a clear identity. Whether it’s an unusual cask finish, an expressive regional style, or just a flavor profile that sticks with you, it demands attention in the best way.
- 🏅 7-8: Unique, but Familiar - It stands out in its category—whether through bold flavors, a twist on tradition, or a standout texture—but it’s not breaking the mold entirely. Still, you’d remember it.
- 😐 5-6: Well-Made, But Not Distinct - Good but not necessarily memorable. It might have a balanced and enjoyable profile, but there’s nothing about it that makes it stand apart from others in the same style.
- 😶 3-4: Generic, lacks identity - Feels like something you’ve had a hundred times before. Even if it’s drinkable, it doesn’t bring anything new or interesting to the table.
- 👻 1-2: Forgettable or Confusing - If you blind-tasted this, you might not even remember drinking it. Or worse—it tries to be unique but in a way that doesn’t work, leaving you more puzzled than impressed.
Secondary: Value for Price
This score reflects whether the quality of the spirit justifies its price. It’s not just about being “cheap”—a $500 bottle can still score a 10/10 if the experience is truly outstanding for the price. This category can be scored out of 10 points. Here’s the breakdown of how to score:
- 🏆 9-10: Exceptional Value – Overdelivers at its price point; an incredible buy for the quality. Feels like you’re getting more than what you paid for.
- 🏅 7-8: Good to Very Good Value – Well-priced for the experience. Feels fair for what it offers, with a slight edge in value.
- 😐 5-6: Average Value – Reasonably priced but not outstanding. You don’t feel like you overpaid, but it doesn’t feel like a deal either.
- 😶 3-4: Below Average to Poor Value – Feels overpriced for what it delivers. The quality doesn’t match the cost, and better options exist at this price.
- 👻 1-2: Terrible Value – Overpriced for Quality – Wildly overpriced, underwhelming experience. You regret buying it or wouldn’t pay this price again.
Secondary: Visual Appeal of the Bottle
Aesthetic matters—this measures both the packaging and the liquid’s appearance, recognizing the impact of branding and presentation. This category can be scored out of 10 points. Here’s the breakdown of how to score:
- 🏆 9-10: Stunning / Collector-Worthy – Gorgeous, high-end design. Luxurious, artistic, or unique packaging that enhances its desirability.
- 🏅 7-8: Attractive & Well-Designed – Eye-catching and stylish. Thoughtful branding with an appealing bottle that stands out on the shelf.
- 😐 5-6: Average / Functional Look – Nothing bad, but nothing special either. Simple, standard, or slightly uninspired design.
-
3-4: Uninspired – Feels lackluster, dated, or underwhelming. Could be improved with better branding or packaging.
-
1-2: Poorly Designed – Actively unappealing or impractical design. Could look cheap, awkward, or misleading about the quality inside.
Secondary: Personal Enjoyment
A subjective measure of how much you personally like drinking it—separate from technical evaluation, this reflects individual taste and preference. This category can be scored out of 10 points. Here’s the breakdown of how to score:
- 🏆 9-10: Phenomenal, A Must-Have – An absolute stunner. You’d happily drink this forever. Whether it’s complex and thought-provoking or just straight-up delicious, it keeps you coming back.
- 🏅 7-8: Excellent, Would Recommend – A whisky you really like, maybe even love, but it’s missing that extra magic to be legendary. You’d gladly drink it again, and you’d recommend it to others.
- 😐 5-6: Decent, But Not Memorable – It’s fine, but nothing special. You wouldn’t go out of your way for it, but you don’t dislike it.
- 😶 3-4: Below Average, Flawed - Something’s off. Whether it’s unbalanced, dull, or just doesn’t sit right with you, it’s not something you’d willingly drink again.
-
1-2: Undrinkable – A struggle to get through. Harsh, unpleasant, or just poorly made. You wouldn’t serve this to a friend—unless you secretly dislike them.
